About This Event

World Indigenous Peoples Day

The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is observed globally on August 9 each year, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994 to recognize the achievements and contributions of indigenous communities while drawing attention to the challenges they continue to face. The date commemorates the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in Geneva in 1982. Each year's observance highlights a different theme related to indigenous rights, culture, language preservation, or environmental stewardship, with events organized by the UN, member states, and indigenous organizations worldwide. In India, the day draws attention to the country's Adivasi and tribal communities, with discussions, cultural showcases, and advocacy events focused on land rights, education, and the preservation of indigenous languages and traditions.
